Other Individual Archives

The archive was donated in 1977 by Elsa Geiger Ariè, daughter of the Austrian poet, writer and essayist Benno Geiger (1882-1965), who for many years lived in Venice, where he died. The largest and most important part of the considerable material consists of letters from almost 500 Italian and foreign correspondents to Geiger, such as Hofmannstahl, Rilke, Kokoschka, Bernard, Perosi, Bossi, Pascoli, Borgese and Comisso. There are also some Geiger publications, preparatory manuscripts of his translations into German of Dante, Petrarch and Pascoli, photographs, proofs, notes, newspaper cuttings, correspondence with publishers and other, minor items. Promoted by the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, a complete list, summaries and selections of the correspondence has been printed in two volumes: the first, Benno Geiger e la cultura italiana, edited by Francesco Zambon and Elsa Geiger Ariè (Olschki, Florence 2007 - "Linea veneta", 19 ) includes the complete catalogue of letters sent to Benno Geiger by his Italian correspondents, a significant selection of the letters and a rich anthology of newspaper articles concerning the writer (notably including two pieces by his friend Giovanni Comisso); the second volume, Benno Geiger e la cultura europea, edited by Marco Meli and Elsa Geiger Ariè, (Olschki, Florence 2010 - "Linea veneta", 21) completes the description of the correspondence held by the Fondazione Cini with the catalogue of all the letters from Geiger's foreign correspondents, mostly Austrian and German writers and artists - such as Hofmannsthal, Zweig, Rilke, Schlaf, Pannwitz and Kokoschka - but also from friends in other countries, such as the French painter Emile Bernard, who made two fine portraits of the writer. As in the volume dedicated to the Italian correspondents, here too a selection of transcribed and translated letters is published, along with various documents of literary interest and complementary material, such as photographs, drawings, poems and items collected by Geiger in the two so-called Federici albums.
