The collection contains the archive of the composer Gian Francesco Malipiero (Venice, 18 March 1882 - Treviso, 1 August 1973), consisting of vast manuscript and printed documentation that covers the entire arc of his career. The considerable correspondence kept by Malipiero with Italian and international cultural figures (including Gabriele D'Annunzio, Luigi Dallapiccola, Hermann Scherchen and Henry Prunières) is a large part of the collection (more than 20,000 letters, telegrams and postcards), along with about 200 files of correspondence ordered by the composer according to place and subject. The musical materials include 50 bound volumes and various work dossiers containing sketches and drafts (a total of about 20,000 pages) that, along with notes and manuscript libretti, document the genesis and various stages of the compositional work. There are also about 700 printed scores of the composer's works, many of which with corrections and annotations. Various kinds of material (correspondence, notes, musical manuscripts and printing proofs) document the work of editing, reviewing and reworking early music: Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Paisiello, Bassani, etc. Malipiero's important work as a critic and essayist is represented by a considerable number of preparatory notes, handwritten drafts and printing proofs of articles and books. The collection is completed by press cuttings, partly ordered by the composer into 25 large albums, and more than 1000 concert programmes that illustrate Italian and international musical life from 1908 to 1973.

The cataloging of musical manuscripts and the writings (manuscripts and typescripts) is under way.
