The archive of the composer Niccolò Castiglioni (Milan, 1932-1996) mainly consists of musical manuscripts: about 2,500 pages of sketches, drafts and scores, providing great evidence of Castiglioni's working methods and artistic development. The early phase of his production is copiously documented: from his first works in 1940 to his diploma in composition, obtained in 1953 with Mistero della resurrezione for voices and chamber orchestra. In addition to almost completely documenting his production of the 1950s, the archive includes various sketches and drafts of the composer's late works. Of particular interest is the unpublished manuscript of Uomini e no (1954-55), an opera in one act based on the homonymous novel by Elio Vittorini. Castiglioni’s correspondence with publishers, composers and music organisers, including Luciano Berio, Sylvano Bussotti, Wolfgang Steinecke and Heinrich Strobel, is also of considerable interest. Lastly, the archive includes several of Castiglioni’s texts and introductory notes, an important collection of concert programmes and press cuttings related to his work as a pianist and composer, plus contracts and publishing accounts.
